Sydyk, "Justice," or, the "Just One," whose name corresponds to the Hebrew Zadok or Zedek, appears in the Phoenician mythology especially as the father of Esmun and the Cabeiri. It is perhaps his name which forms the final element in Melchizedek, Adoni-zedek, and the like. We have no evidence that he was really worshipped by the Phoenicians.
The name is similar to that of Melchi-zedek, though the exact interpretation of it is a matter of doubt. It points, however, to a special use of the word zedek, "righteousness," and it is therefore interesting to find the word actually employed in one of the letters of Ebed-Tob. What makes the occurrence of the word the more striking is that it was utterly unknown to the Babylonians.
