A flotilla of Zeppelins shelled Blyth, Wallsend, and South Shields, on the northeastern coast of England on the night of April 14, 1915. This attack was directed primarily at the industrial and shipping centers of Tyneside. Berlin claimed a distinct success, but the British denied that extensive harm had been done. French airmen drove home an attack on April 15, 1915, that had important results.

The cost of the Wallsend coal on board the ship may be stated at 10s. 6d. per ton; to this must be added the charge at coal-market of 2s. 8d., freight say 5s. 9d., profit 7s. 6d., so that a ton of coal of this kind will cost in your cellar in London the sum of £1, 6s. 5d.

But Wallsend itself, as all the world knows, is of much greater antiquity, for was it not, as its name proclaims, situated at the end of the Great Wall? Its name then, however, was not Wallsend but Segedunum. Willington Quay, further down the river, was, for a time, the home of George Stephenson, and here his son, Robert, was born.

Turning, however, to that part of the coal-field regarded as precarious, and consisting of first, second, and third-rate household coal, we have for future use 300 square miles. London was formerly supplied from the pits east of Tyne Bridge, where is the famous Wallsend Colliery, which gave the name to the best coal.

What is the nature of your case?" "Illegal imprisonment, my lord." "Very well; if it is any convenience to you, Mr. Wallsend, I will take it last." By the look of the young man it seemed of no great convenience. "That will give your witnesses time to be here, I hope."

The christening took place in the school-house at Wallsend, the old parish church being at the time in so dilapidated a condition from thecreepingor subsidence of the ground, consequent upon the excavation of the coal, that it was considered dangerous to enter it.

George Stephenson was born in 1781 at High Street House, Wylam, near Newcastle, while at Frudhoe Castle is a seat of the Duke of Northumberland. At Wallsend, three miles east of Newcastle, begins the celebrated Roman wall that crossed Britain, and was defended by their legions against incursions by the Scots.

Only last night an order arrived from " "I know. Madagascar. You're no good as a sales-man." I drew myself up. "From Honolulu, for twenty-two 'God-sends." I said icily. "Madagascar's request was for 'Duchesses." "That, over there, is a 'Wallsend, I mean 'God-send." "And I suppose you've supplied Cochin China for years." "One of our oldest clients," said I.

North and north-west lay a wild country, abounding in moors, mountains, and morasses, but occupied to a certain extent by fierce and barbarous tribes. To defend the young colony against their ravages, a strong wall was built by the Romans, extending from Wallsend on the north bank of the Tyne, a few miles below Newcastle, across the country to Burgh-upon-Sands on the Solway Firth.

If we were in the secret of Sir Barnes Newcome's correspondence, and could but peep into that particular letter to his grandmother, I dare say we should read that he had seen the Colonel, who was very anxious about his darling youth's suit, but, pursuant to Lady Kew's desire, Barnes had stoutly maintained that her ladyship was still in the North, enjoying the genial hospitality of Lord Wallsend.
