Atoms have a mind as much smaller and less complex than ours as their bodies are smaller and less complex. Complex mind involves complex matter and vice versa. On the whole I think it would be most convenient to endow all atoms with a something of consciousness and volition, and to hold them to be pro tanto, living.

My individual claim, viz. the pay stipulated in the Imperial patents, was agreed upon without limitation as to time, as is clear from the expression that I should receive it whether "afloat or ashore," "tanto em terra como no mar," i.e. whether "actively engaged or not" whether "in war or peace."

He anticipated that some of the States might pass similar laws for their own benefit; in which case he recommended Congress to "provide for accepting such persons from such States, according to some mode of valuation, in lieu, pro tanto, of direct taxes, or upon some other plan to be agreed on."

"Nuovo pensiero dentro a me si mise, Dal qual più altri nacquero e diversi; E tanto di uno in altro vaneggiai Che gli occhi per vaghezza ricopersi, E il pensamento in sogno trasmutai." So Dante writes in the "Purgatorio" with deep and subtle truth. Each man can verify for himself the exactness of the great poet's description.

Where he writes in a thoroughly objective spirit, and lets the force of his sentiment be guessed at only by some outward fact, as in the magnificent sonnets 'Tanto gentile, etc., and 'Vede perfettamente, etc., he seems to feel the need of excusing himself. The human spirit had taken a mighty step towards the consciousness of its own secret life.

"So che andar diritto mi bisogna, Ch' io non ci mescolassi una bugia, Che questa non è storia da menzogna; Che come in esco un passo de la via, Chi gracchia, chi riprende, e chi rampogna: Ognun poi mi riesce la pazzia; Tanto ch' eletto ho solitaria vita, Che la turba di questi è infinita.

"Simpatica!" the responsive people cried with glowing faces. "Angiola! Tanto Simpatica!" The Lady Fiorenza standing where she could see the face of her child gave thanks for the vision, with joyful tears. "This hast thou granted her, Madonna mia Beatissima, for a wedding gift!"

"The most probable opinion is, that the piercing of the heart of the Saint took place in 1559. Brev. Rom. in fest. S. Teresiae, Oct. 15, Lect. v.: "Tanto autem divini amoris incendio cor ejus conflagravit, ut merito viderit Angelum ignito jaculo sibi praecordia transverberantem." The Carmelites keep the feast of this piercing of the Saint's heart on the 27th of August. Ch. xx. section 11. St.

"Fit audience find, though few." To the "Ode on the Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of early Childhood" the poet might have prefixed the lines which Dante addresses to one of his own Canzoni "Canzone, i' credo, che saranno radi Color, che tua ragione intendan bene, Tanto lor sei faticoso ed alto."
