One is reminded of a passage in the Talavakara-Upanishad: "That which does not speak by speech, but by which speech is expressed: That alone shalt thou know as Brahman, not that which they here adore. "That which does not think by mind, but by which mind is itself thought: That alone shalt thou know as Brahman, not that which they here adore." And so it continues of each of the sense-functions.
It is also known as the Talavakara-Upanishad because of its place as a chapter in the Talavakara-Brahmana of the Sama-Veda. Among the Upanishads it is one of the most analytical and metaphysical, its purpose being to lead the mind from the gross to the subtle, from effect to cause.
