About a league before we reached the country of Gil Blas, we passed through an extensive wood, in which were rocks and precipices; it was exactly such a place as that in which the cave of Rolando was situated, as described in the novel. This wood has an evil name, and our guide informed us that robberies were occasionally committed in it.

One I remember especially one who never eased me personally of a single maravedi one than whom I never met a bandit more gallant, courteous, and amiable. Rob me? Rolando feasted me; treated me to his dinner and his wine; kept a generous table for his friends, and I know was most liberal to many of them. How well I remember one of his speculations! It was a great plan for smuggling tobacco.

We have the text-book of Roger, with the commentary of Rolando, and then the so-called commentary of the Four Masters. These writings were probably made rather for the medical school at Bologna than that of Salerno, though there is no doubt that at least Roger and Rolando received their education at Salerno and embodied in their writings the surgical traditions of that school.

In no case, however, are either the frontal or the temporal sulci the earliest. As a rule the occipito-parietal is the earlier of the two. At the latter part of this period, another sulcus, the "posterio-parietal," or "Fissure of Rolando" is developed, and it is followed, in the course of the sixth month, by the other principal sulci of the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes.

"Look," said Henri to Chicot, "are not those cavaliers that I see there?" Chicot looked and said, "Yes, sire, cavaliers, but not huntsmen." "Why not?" "Because they are armed like Amadis or Rolando," replied Chicot. "Ah! what matters the dress, my dear Chicot? you see we are not particular as to that." "But I see at least two hundred men there." "Ah! that is a good number."

The very beginning was made in 1824 by Rolando, who first thought of cutting chemically hardened pieces of brain tissues into thin sections for microscopical examination the basal structure upon which almost all the later advances have been conducted.

'Twas when the cup was sparkling before us, and heaven gave a portion of its blue, boys, blue, that I remember the song of Roland at the "Old Piazza Coffee-house." And now where is the "Old Piazza Coffee-house?" Where is Thebes? where is Troy? where is the Colossus of Rhodes? Ah, Rolando, Rolando! thou wert a gallant captain, a cheery, a handsome, a merry. At ME thou never presentedst pistol.

In no case, however, are either the frontal or the temporal sulci the earliest. As a rule the occipito- parietal is the earlier of the two. Thus apparelled he climbed on foot to the holy mountain of La Verna, above the Val d'Arno, which mountain the Count Rolando of Montefeltro had given, many years before, to St. Francis the minstrel of God and his poor little disciples of the cross, for a refuge and a sanctuary near the sky. At the door of the Friary built upon the land of his forefathers the Count Angelo knocked humbly as a beggar.

It might have succeeded, I can't say: but the bold and merry, the hearty and kindly Rolando came to grief a little matter of imitated signatures occasioned a Bank persecution of Rolando the Brave.
