Djebel Yakyan, on the side of Shab Aamer Djebel el Aaredj, near the latter Djebel el Motabekh, or Shab Aamer; so called because the Toba kings of Yemen, when they invaded Mekka, established here their kitchen Shab Abou Dobb Shab e' Szafa, or Djebel Raha, Shab Beni Kenane Shab el Khor Shab Athmen.

The outbreak of the first Burma War, in 1824, brought us into closer relations with the Raja of Jaintia, and in April of that year Mr. David Scott, the Governor-General's Agent on the frontier, marched through his territory from Sylhet to Assam, emerging at Raha on the Kalang river, in what is now the Nowgong district.

Superior P. M. Commander of Southern Region. "To The Honourable Sultan Raha Halon" Spanish for "mountain people." Extract from a letter to Apacible of the Hongkong junta dated February 26, 1899: "It is also said that the Cantonal Government of Negros has wished to make a treaty with the Americans, some members of that government having come in American transports to confer with General Otis.

When we had finished this strenuous pursuit, every ten days or so flying columns were organised to look for them and, if possible, drive them out of their rocky fastnesses thirty miles away. One of the few vulnerable points in these hills was the Raha Pass and incredibly difficult it was even to approach.

From Firan it is held, by Professor Sayce and others, that the main body of the Israelites with their flocks and herds probably passed the Wadi esh-Shekh, while Moses and the elders went by Wadi Selaf and Nakb el-Hawa. The final camping-ground, at which took place the giving of the Law, is supposed to be the Raha plain at the foot of the peak of Jebel Musa.

Their riders were never found. We had to wait long weeks before our chance came. It was rather a curious affair. The solution to the whole question lay in our being able to get the guns to the top of a certain hill commanding the Raha Pass. If this could be accomplished things would be very warm indeed for the people in the Pass. It took twenty-six horses to pull the gun to the top of that hill!

Now, when he too was pleased, we knew that a move was what the Americans call a "cinch." And so it proved. To wind up with a flourish, as it were, we went out to the hills again for a last and, as it happened, most successful attempt on the Raha Pass, when we climbed the hill mentioned earlier in this chapter. Marching orders were awaiting us on our return.
