There is a raison d'être for string courses other than to mark the position of a floor on the interior of a building, and for quoins and pilasters other than to indicate the presence of a transverse wall.

Quoins were blocks of wood, square, and wedge-shaped, with ring-hooks screwed in them for the greater ease of handling.
