It is no doubt, on account of its brevity that Boswell in speaking of it writes: 'What is called The Life. See Boswell's Hebrides, Oct, 29, 1773. See ante, under Feb. 7, 1775. See post, p. 139. See ante, i. 494. From Prior's imitation of Gualterus Danistonus ad Amicos; the poem mentioned by Boswell in his Hebrides, Aug. 18, 1773. Copy is manuscript for printing. Leland says in 1540: "Ther was a right fair and strong castella within Old-Saresbyri longing to the Erles of Saresbyri especially the Longerpees. I read that one Gualterus was the first Erle after the conquest of it. Much ruinus building of this castelle yet ther remayneth.

Bullinger and Gualterus "were unwilling to contend with these men like fencing-masters," tired of their argufying; unable to "withdraw our entire confidence from the Bishops." Knox may have been less unsympathetic, but his advice agreed with the advice of the Genevans.

"A Scotch surgeon may have more learning than an English one, and all Scotland could not muster learning enough for Lowth's Prelections." See ante, ii. 363, and March 30, 1783. The poem is entitled Gualterus Danistonus ad Amicos. It begins: 'Dum studeo fungi fallentis munere vitae' Which Prior imitates: 'Studious the busy moments to deceive.

Bullinger and Gualterus in particular were outworn by the pertinacious English Puritans who visited them. One Sampson had, when in exile, made the life of Peter Martyr a burden to him by his "clamours," doubts, and restless dissatisfaction.
