Unlike Wagner's other operas, in "Rienzi" set melody dominates, and the orchestra, as in the Italian school, furnishes the accompaniments. We have the regular overture, aria, duet, trio, and concerted finale; but after "Rienzi" we shall observe a change, at last becoming so radical that the composer himself threw aside his first opera as unworthy of performance.

On the third day, the wind being abated, though still unfavourable, we reimbarked and rowed along shore, passing by Porto-mauricio, and Oneglia; then turning the promontory called Capo di Melle, we proceeded by Albenga, Finale, and many other places of inferior note.

The finale of this tale was received with a burst of incredulous laughter by those who heard it. 'Do you 'ear what Harlow says, Bob? Easton shouted to Crass. 'No. What was it? ''E ses 'e once 'ad a chance to 'ave something but 'e wouldn't take it on because it was too ugly! 'If it 'ad bin me, I should 'ave shut me bl y eyes, cried Sawkins. 'I wouldn't pass it for a trifle like that.

The 'Master' is really too priceless! Just as though, 'in the Ninth, he said 'we need only have the finale, or 'just the overture' of the Meistersinger." The Doctor, however, urged Mme.

"It is good," Janin agreed, his interest stirred; "but there are better the Dio Possente, the Brindisi from Hamlet. Once I led the finale of Hamlet. I saw the Director " "I'll get every one," the boy interrupted. "There are others now, newer finer still, I'm told; but I don't know." Janin rose and steadied himself against the fence. "Give me a start.

Doctor, I daresay that your clay wants moistening, so take the first pull." This important commencement and finale to the repast having been duly administered, they proceeded to the range of buildings before mentioned, in one of which they found the lady in the straw, sitting up, and showing her white teeth at her master's approach, as if nothing very particular had occurred.

Thence one emerged after half an hour quite fresh to dance on and on, till the fiddlers played a fast finale, and went to their supper. Then came an interval of talk and laughing, of making new friends or stabbing delicately old enemies. Also and further much primping in the dressing-room. Dancing steadily through a temperature of 98 in the shade plays hob with some sorts of prettiness.

The music is ultra-Wagnerian, the finale genuine Strauss, with its swelling melos, its almost superhuman forcing of the emotional line to the ecstatic point. In Elektra, with the composer conducting, I again marvelled at the noisy, ineffective "reading" of a Hammerstein conductor, whose name I've forgotten. Yet New York has seen the best of Elektras, Mme.

The Finale is conceived in mystical retrospect, beginning in vein of prologue: over mysterious murmuring strings, long sustained notes of the reed and horn in octave descent are mingled with a soft carillon of horns and trumpets in the call of the Scherzo. In slower pace and hush of sound sings a madrigal of tender phrases. A pair of melodies recall like figures of the first Allegro.

In all that assists most to mature a native work of this immense importance it is sound sense, equivalent to the gravest optimism, to express this opinion, that the highest powers of science ought humbly, intelligently to co-operate towards achieving a grand and triumphant finale, perfect, harmonious in all its parts, and responsible to the academic dictates of its sacred title.
