I read the other day, in a book of Professor Eucken's, a phrase, 'Die erhohung des vorgefundenen daseins, which seems to be pertinent here. Why may not thought's mission be to increase and elevate, rather than simply to imitate and reduplicate, existence?
And may not previous reality itself be there, far less for the purpose of reappearing unaltered in our knowledge, than for the very purpose of stimulating our minds to such additions as shall enhance the universe's total value. "Die erhohung des vorgefundenen daseins" is a phrase used by Professor Eucken somewhere, which reminds one of this suggestion by the great Lotze.
The words of the German poet are literally true: "Nach ehernen, eisernen, grossen Gesetzen, Müssen wir alle unseres Daseins Kreise vollenden." But man is an animal. And the principal characteristic of an animal is that it eats a certain amount of solid food. The plant lives on fluid nutriment, and this comes to it by the process of diffusion in every drop of water and breath of air.
