A brother sent me, from a distance of several thousand miles £60 0s. 0d. We live free of rent, which is worth for our part £10 0s. 0d. Totaling £267 15s 8 1/4d. It is just now four years since I first began to trust in the Lord alone for the supply of my temporal wants. My little all I then had, at most worth 100l. a year, I gave up to the Lord, having then nothing left but about 5l.

This end of the town every day grows very bad of the plague. The Mortality Bill is come to 267: which is about ninety more than the last: and of these but four in the City, which is a great blessing to us. Took leave again of Mr. Coventry; though I hope the Duke is not gone to stay, and so do others too.

Gladstone's "The State in its Relations with the Church," chap. viii. p. 315. Lang's New South Wales, vol. ii. p. 317, &c. See also, at 265-6, a series of similar statements. In 1814, our tonnage was diminished to 1,159,288 tons, a point actually below that of 1807; and at the close of the second epoch of twenty-four years, in 1831, during which our population had doubled, the tonnage remained at 1,267,846 tons, having virtually made no progress in the second epoch of twenty-four years, commencing with the Embargo.

By this law, the king's prerogative of exacting loans was ratified; and what ought to be deemed a "reasonable" excuse was still left in his own breast to determine. * Haynes, p. 518, 519. D'Ewes, p. 494. v Bacon, vol. iv p. 362. v* Monson, p 267.

The secret lay in the extraordinary increase of the population. Settlers came in so rapidly that, where in 1834 there were but 87,278 inhabitants, there were over 212,267 in 1840, and it was precisely this growth, evidences of which were on every hand, that encouraged those educational pioneers to aim high.

The London Metropolitan Police District covers 690 square miles, extending 12 to 15 miles in every direction from Charing Cross, and contained in 1881 a population of 4,764,312; but what is generally known as London covers 122 square miles, containing, in 1881, 528,794 houses, and a population of 3,814,574, averaging 7.21 persons per house, 49 per acre, and 31,267 per square mile.

The surgeon touched the kneeling figure of Convict Adair on the arm, and together they walked softly out of the cabin. "Come again in an hour, Adair," said Dr. Williams; "you can help me best. We must bury him by daylight. Meanwhile you can get a little sleep." No. 267 clasped his hands tightly together as he looked at the doctor, and his lips worked and twitched convulsively.
