Robert James Loyd-Lindsay, K.C.B., V.C. is the eldest son of the late Lieut.-General James Lindsay. He was educated at Eton, and at an early age entered the Army. He served in the Guinea, 1854-5, part of the time as Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief. At the battle of Alma, amidst great disorder, he reformed the line and stood firm with the colours.
During the past winter 1854-5 very frequent mention of Frederick Douglass was made under this head in the daily papers; his name glided as often this week from Chicago, next week from Boston over the lightning wires, as the name of any other man, of whatever note. To no man did the people more widely nor more earnestly say, "Tell me thy thought!"
I have no record of that northward journey or of the experiences of the winter of 1854-5. In all probability Mr. and Mrs. Browning remained in, or as near as possible to, Florence, since their income was still too limited for continuous travelling.
