My introduction to the leucostictes occurred on the summit of Pikes Peak, at an elevation of 14,147 feet above the level of the sea. With exhausting toil I climbed the peak one night, and the next morning, when I stepped out of the signal station, where I had secured lodging, a flock of the brown-caps were flitting merrily about the garbage heap, helping themselves to an early breakfast.

There still remained to be traversed 147 miles before Candahar should be reached, and the dreaded Kojuk Pass had still to be penetrated. Keane was a soldier who had gained a reputation for courage in Egypt and the Peninsula.

It is manifest that upon countless important public issues there is no collective will, and nothing in the mind of the average man except blank indifference; that an electional system simply places power in the hands of the most skilful electioneers.... Wells, Anticipations, p. 147.

And these objects they achieved to their satisfaction. L'Invasione tedesca, p. 147. Thus, in order to strangle concerns that compete with them successfully, the average German merchant sticks at nothing. His maxim is, that in trade as in all forms of the struggle for existence, necessity knows no law. And he is himself the judge of necessity.

For Cambridge, Mr. Cobden bowled fast, Mr. Ward was an excellent medium pace bowler, Mr. Money's slows were sometimes fortunate, and Mr. Bourne bowled slow round. Cambridge went in first, and only got 147. Mr. Yardley fell for 2, being caught by Mr. Butler off Mr. Francis. Mr. Scott's 45 was the largest score, and Mr. Thornton contributed 17, while Mr. Francis and Mr. Belcher divided the wickets.

Of these, 369 were German 269 of them brought down by the British and 98 by the French. The British lost 147; the French and Belgian, if the German claims can be trusted, 201. It is a terrible list, and a terrible testimony to the extreme importance and intensity of the air-fighting now going on.

Luther has particular reference to the Elector's high rank. But it divides Ps. 147 into two; vv. 1-11 being counted as Ps. 146, and vv. 12-20 as Ps. 147; and so both versions agree again from Ps. 148 to 150. Luther harks back to his discussion of this point in the Preface, p. 113. Particular reference to the Elector. See pp. 147 ff. Cypr. de mortal. c. Vulgate reading. See pp. 149 f.

"In many places a log of wood, or a wide slip of bark, tied at either end, and stuffed with clay, is the only mode invented for crossing a river or arm of the sea, while in other parts a large tree, roughly hollowed by fire, forms the canoe." M. MARTIN'S New South Wales, p. 147. Flinders' Voyage, vol. ii. p. 138.

The parliament went so far as to make some approaches, in one province, to their Independent model. And in this particular, as well as in their wandering life, they pretended to be more truly apostolical. * Dr. John Walker's Attempt, p. 147, et seq.
