They, like soldiers in khaki, reconnoitre him in a uniform expressly designed to elude the eye, but he flaunts a flag resplendent with green and gold. And when his one chance of life lies in springing nimbly from the ground and committing himself to his strong wings, he must lift and carry this ponderous paraphernalia with him. And the terrible Bonelli's eagle is soaring above.

Scops spilocephalus. The spotted Himalayan scops owl. Gyps himalayensis. The Himalayan griffon. Pseudogyps bengalensis. The white-backed vulture. Aquila helica. The imperial eagle. Hieraëtus fasciatus. Bonelli's eagle. Ictinaëtus malayensis. The black eagle. This is easily recognised by its dark, almost black, plumage. Spilornis cheela. The crested serpent eagle. Milvus govinda.

The plumage of the latter is of much darker hue than that of the former. Bonelli's eagle is a bold bird that works great havoc among tame pigeons. It sometimes carries off a barnyard fowl. The black eagle is content with smaller quarry: young birds, rats, and snakes, seem to constitute the chief articles of its diet.

Its lower parts are pale in hue. Bonelli's eagle is fairly common both at Naini Tal and Mussoorie. It is a fine bird, and has plenty of courage. It often stoops to fowls and is destructive to game birds. It is of slighter build than the two eagles above described. Its lower parts are white. The changeable hawk-eagle is also a fine bird. It is very addicted to peafowl.
