Pendant deux siècles, toute la population du quartier des halles réclama contre ce vaste tombeau, situé dans la partie la plus populeuse et la plus malsaine de Paris; mais ce fut seulement en 1785 qu'une ordonnance royale prescrivit sa destruction. Alors on démolit l'église et les charniers; on détruisit tous les monuments du cimetière, antiquités précieuses pour la plupart, telles que les vieilles chapelles d'Orgemont et de Pomereux, la tour Notre-Dame-des-Bois, le prêchoir, la croix des Bureaux, la croix de Gâtine, etc. Par les soins de Fourcroy et de Thouret, on enleva les ossements et plusieurs pieds de terre du cimetière, et l'on transporta les débris de 1,200,000 cadavres dans les carrières ou catacombes du faubourg Saint-Jacques . L'emplacement du cimetière fut destiné
