In last month's issue of this Journal a very interesting article, signed "Veritas," discussed the question as to how far it was in the power of the Allies to make use of the economic weapon against their enemies after the war.

He was obliged to speak rather loudly, because of the noise that came up from the overcrowded dining-room. "Well, then, how did he strike you?" Maddox's eyes curled with limpid, infantile devilry. "Well, I daresay he might be a bit of a bounder when he's sober, but he's a perfect little gentleman when he's drunk. Softens him down somehow." "In vino veritas a true gentleman at heart."

The same figure tradition connects it with Simonetta, the Mistress of Giuliano de' Medici appears again as Judith, returning home across the hill country, when the great deed is over, and the moment of revulsion come, when the olive branch in her hand is becoming a burthen; as Justice, sitting on a throne, but with a fixed look of self-hatred which makes the sword in her hand seem that of a suicide; and again as Veritas, in the allegorical picture of Calumnia, where one may note in passing the suggestiveness of an accident which identifies the image of Truth with the person of Venus.

Well, then, it fades.... I begin to see that this cannot continue ... of Tea it came, inconsecutive and empty; with the influence of Tea dissolving, let these words also dissolve.... I could wish it had been Opium, or Haschisch, or even Gin; you would have had something more soaring for your money.... In vino Veritas. In Aqua satietas. In ... What is the Latin for Tea? What!

The spirit of God, that Divine spark of Deity within every human soul, never sleeps, never rests. "On and upward" is its cry. "Omnia vincit veritas."

Through the thin wall which separated the school-room from the study came the sound of Mary's scales. Mary was by nature a child of wrath, as far as music was concerned, and Fräulein anxious, musical Fräulein was strenuously endeavoring to impart to her pupil the rudiments of what was her chief joy in life. "'Modern Dissent," read aloud Mr. Gresley, "by Veritas." "Veritas!" repeated Hester.

An ivory bookmark told him the page. Nones. He should have read that before lunch. But lady Maxwell had come. Father Conmee read in secret Pater and Ave and crossed his breast. Deus in adiutorium. He walked calmly and read mutely the nones, walking and reading till he came to Res in Beati immaculati: Principium verborum tuorum veritas: in eternum omnia indicia iustitiae tuae.

But the truth is that I am the least of Christ's servants, because I have been unfaithful to Him, and you repeat to me Pilate's very words: Quid est veritas? Now you are not disposed to receive truth, as Pilate was not disposed to receive it." "Oh!" his interlocutor exclaimed. "And why not?" His friend laughed noisily.
