The upper Thames and its little tributaries for some ten miles from its source are not only indifferent to county boundaries, but run through a territory which has been singularly indefinite in the past. For instance, the parish of Kemble, wherein the first waters now appear, has been counted now in Gloucester, now in Wilts.

The woman who says and acts on it is well, she is fit company for them. But only the woman of natural courage can say it and act on it. Would she come by Winchester, or choose the lower road by Salisbury and Southampton, to smell the sea? perhaps-like her! dismissing the chariot and hiring a yacht for a voyage round the coast and up the Thames.

"In the devil's name, is that you, Jack!" ejaculated Kneebone. "It is," replied Sheppard. "You have uttered a wilful and deliberate falsehood in asserting that I have murdered Thames, for whom you well know I would lay down my life. Retract your words instantly, or take the consequences."

He put to sea immediately, and sailed to the Isle of Wight, where he was joined by Harold, with a squadron which the nobleman had collected in Ireland. Reinforced by great numbers from all quarters, he entered the Thames; and appearing before London, threw every thing into confusion.

And this work was published so late as A.D. 1825.

A childish pleasure in producing small mechanical effects unaided must have some part in the sense of enterprise wherewith you gird your shoulders with the tackle, and set out, alone but necessary, on the even path of the lopped and grassy side of the Thames the side of meadows.

One would have thought he had had enough of fighting, but he was with Wayne at the Fallen timbers and with William Henry Harrison at the battle of the Thames. Sadly enough, the last years of this old hero were passed in want.

These were the chief military exploits of the podagric Perseus in behalf of the Flemish Andromeda. A very daring adventure was however proposed to the archduke. Philip calmly suggested that an expedition should be rapidly fitted out in Dunkirk, which should cross the channel, ascend the Thames as far as Rochester, and burn the English fleet.

"On through that gate, through which before Went Sydney, Russell, Raleigh, Cranmer, More." The Archbishop of Canterbury, the primate of England, who crowns the sovereigns, has his palace at Lambeth, on the south side of the Thames, opposite Westminster, and its most noted portion is the Lollards' Tower.
