Somewhat more difficult to adjust would be Tertullian's relations to the different forms of the Old Latin and Curetonian Syriac. The paraphrase might naturally enough occur to a single writer here or there, but the extent of the coincidence is remarkable.

We reach at last that strange document which, through more or less remote descent, became the parent of the Curetonian Syriac on the one hand and of the Old Latin on the other. These two lines severally branch off. The Old Latin itself divides. Strictly speaking indeed there can be no true genealogical tree. The course of descent is not clear and direct all the way.

It was in the summer of 1825, that Asaad el-Shidiak became first personally known to the mission, as the instructor of Mr. King in the Syriac language. His case soon acquired an extraordinary interest, and will occupy a separate chapter. In March, 1826, several Greek vessels entered the port of Beirût, and landed five hundred men.

Bloodthirsty and voluptuous alike, they were viewed with equal terror by the Frank pilgrim, the Syriac villager, the Armenian merchant, and the Saracen hadji whose ransom and whose spoil enriched their chambers, with all that the licentious tastes of East and West united could desire.

As for shelter near you, he went on, lowering his voice, and speaking like her, in Syriac 'Hypatia the Gentile is far too lovely for the peace of mind of Raphael the Jew. He did not think that the most ordinary sermons are good enough for the mission field; for he knew that the Nestorians could discriminate as well as others nearer home, and so wrote out his sermons carefully in English, but in the Syriac idiom, noting on a blank page the books consulted in their preparation. He also excelled in labors for individuals. The first inquirer became such while Mr.
