Something more than a passing look at the coal specimens in a good museum will well repay the time so spent. What are known as septarian nodules, or snake-stones, are, at certain places, common in the carboniferous strata. They are composed of layers of ironstone and sandstone which have segregated around some central object, such as a fern-leaf or a shell.

Faraday detected in the specimen submitted to him was that of the Indian on whose person the effect was exhibited on the occasion to which my informant was an eye-witness. The snake-charmers from the coast who visit Ceylon profess to prepare the snake-stones for themselves, and to preserve the composition a secret. Dr.

Llhuyd informs us that "the Cornish retain a variety of charms, and have still towards the Land's-End, the amulets of Maen-Magal and Glain-neider, which latter they call Melprer, and have a charm for the snake to make it, when they find one asleep, and stick a hazel wand in the centre of her spirae," or coils. The rings thus generated are called Gleiner-nadroeth, or snake-stones.

Pliny, Naturalis Historia xxviii. 33 sq. Rev. Pliny, Naturalis Historia, xxix. 52-54. Compare W.W. Skeat, "Snakestones and Stone Thunderbolts," Folk-lore, xxiii. pp. 45 sqq. The rings thus generated, are called Gleineu Nadroeth; in English, Snake-stones.

At length the snake-stones dropped off of their own accord; the suffering of the man appeared to subside; he twisted his fingers till the joints cracked, and went on his way without concern.
