It is formed of five shelly, wedge-shaped pieces, each ending in a hard, triangular tooth. The whole mouth is a conical box, called by naturalists "Aristotle's lantern." The shell is hardly thicker than that of a hen's egg, and is even more fragile.

Shrimps carry their eggs about with them; no doubt you have often found masses of eggs under the Shrimp's body. Each egg is fastened by a kind of "glue," or else the rapid jerking of the mother Shrimp would soon loosen the eggs and set them free. The hard, shelly covering of the Shrimp and Prawn is like the armour of the crab it will not stretch in the least.

He couldn't help calling aloud that name, even though the soberer part of his brain knew there could be no answer. "Shelly!" The blond head turned, and blue eyes looked at him, startled, across a bowed shoulder. Drew's puzzlement was complete. Not Sheldon, of course, but who? The other's open surprise changed to wide-eyed recognition first. "Drew!"

It would have been easy for him to get out of it; but his natural impulse was for frankness, and he remembered his old resolve to be frank, no matter what happened. "Yes," he answered. "Just that. Several times." She shivered and drew away from him. "No man that I have ever known did that ever did that." "Then they never worked in the laundry at Shelly Hot Springs," he laughed bitterly.

Major Shelly, the grandfather of these very young persons, stroked his mustache and looked indulgent. "Show almost human intelligence, don't they?" said their father, as he lay flat on his back and permitted the babies to climb over him. "Ya-as," drawled the major. "They do. It was like being at the bottom of the sea, alive there, to be in this black, shelly, weed-smelling ship.

Epimetheus accordingly proceeded to bestow upon the different animals the various gifts of courage, strength, swiftness, sagacity; wings to one, claws to another, a shelly covering to a third, etc. But when man came to be provided for, who was to be superior to all other animals, Epimetheus had been so prodigal of his resources that he had nothing left to bestow upon him.

The maximum length is three miles by about the same breadth, and the circumference, including the indentations, may be fifteen. The surface is rolling composed of humus and clay, corallines and shelly conglomerates based on tertiary limestone and perhaps sandstone; dwarf clearings alternate with tracts of bush grass, and with a bushy second growth, lacking large trees.
