To commemorate this important victory, Louis XIV. caused a medal to be struck, representing the Spanish ambassador, the Marquis de Fuente, making the declaration to that king, "No concurrer con los ambassadores des de Francia," with this inscription, "Jus praecedendi assertum," and under it, "Hispaniorum excusatio coram xxx legatis principum, 1662."

We dwell upon this prince not without reason in this particular; for, amongst the Caesars, Hadrian stands forward in high relief as a reformer of the army. Well and truly might it be said of him that, post Caesarem Octavianum labantem disciplinam, incurid superiorum principum, ipse retinuit.

First ye may see his sepulchre in the monastery of Glastonbury; and also in 'Polychronicon, in the fifth book, the sixth chapter, and in the seventh book, the twenty-third chapter, where his body was buried, and after found and translated into the said monastery. Ye shall see also in the history of Boccaccio, in his book 'De casu principum, part of his noble acts and also of his fall.

First, I show you a pair of Aldines, and, what is better, a pair editionum principum, the first Sophocles and the first Thucydides. Both have the proper attestation at the end that they come from the Aldi in Venice in the year 1502, the Thucydides in May, and the Sophocles in August; hence the former has not the Aldine anchor at the extreme end.

Such was the political doctrine taught in the Catholic universities of Europe until the sixteenth century; but, in all probability, this golden work, "De Regimine Principum," was no longer the text-book in the English schools of the time of Henry Tudor.

Those who desire further information about any particular writer of the period will find it in Stintzing, Literaturgeschichte des röm. Rechts, or in Chevallier's Répertoire historique des Sources du moyen âge; Bio-bibliographie. The authorship of the treatise De Regimine Principum, from which we shall frequently quote, often attributed to Aquinas, is very doubtful.

In the first meaning of mastership man would not have been ruled by man in the state of innocence; but in the latter sense man would be ruled over by man in that state. In De Regimine Principum Aquinas also accepts what we may call the Augustinian view of slavery.

S. Mater Ecclesia Ravennas, vera mater, vera orthodoxa nam ceterae multae Ecclesiae falsam propter metum et terrores Principum superinduxere doctrinam; haec vero et veram et unicam Sanctam Catholicam tenuit Fidem, nunquam mutavit fluctuationem sustinuit, a tempestate quassata immobilis permansit. Holder-Egger. Such was the work achieved in the fortunate capital.
