Butler, one of my pals, was started out to make the necessary repairs. He left on his dangerous mission, crouching along and taking advantage of every bit of shelter on the way, but several ping! pings! warned him that he was treading on danger ground. He kept at his work, busily hunting for the break in the wire, with the sniping pills passing his ears continually.

To-night, however, because of the fog, Rosamund expected to find few people. One bell was mournfully ringing as she drew near and presently saw a faint gleaming of light through long narrow windows of painted glass. "Ping, ping, ping!" It was a thin little summons to prayer. She passed through a gateway in some railings of wrought ironwork, crossed a slippery pavement and entered the church.

But, miraculously, no bullets came near them, no whistling was about their ears, no ping and smack of impacting lead hailed about them except, yes, just the fire of one rifle or two that sent aimed bullet after bullet hissing over them.

Everything was quiet, even on the elevated road; but when the next train came thundering along, I heard, piercing shrilly through the rumble and roar, that same sharp ping which had wakened me. What was it? It seemed to come from somewhere in the house. But how could that be! I was startled enough, however, to get up and slip on some of my clothes and stand with ears astretch for the next train.

"Velly wude little Mellican boy," said the first little Chinaman, whose name was Ping Pong. "Velly bad manners," said the second, who was called Sing Song. "You beggy our pardon," the third, whose name was Ah See. Now Marmaduke intended to do that very thing that is, beg their pardon, for he was very polite for an American boy.

In the same instant that he heard the ping of the shot he pitched sideways and flattened himself on the ground with the chuck-box between him and the fire. A roll and a quick crawl took him into the underbrush beyond the circle of firelight. No second bullet followed him in his amazingly swift movements.

"Ping! ping!" came from Mr Mackay's and the boatswain's rifles again in quick succession. And yet again, marvellous as it may seem, they both missed.

You mean you did not like to have the big German shells come over?" smiled the Overland girl. "No likee." Hippy's appetite was getting the better him and at this juncture he voiced his desire for food. "Come, come, Ping. We are hungry. Rustle some grub for us, for we may wish to on our way," urged Hi Lang.

Schomberg had had no time to enter into details, Davidson told us. Indeed, the wonder was that they had been left alone so long. The drowsy afternoon was slipping by. Footsteps and voices resounded on the veranda I beg pardon, the piazza; the scraping of chairs, the ping of a smitten bell. Customers were turning up. Mrs.

"Crack!" almost in her face came a second spit of fire in the darkness, and a bullet crashed through the leaves and buried itself in a tree with a ping. The intruder's marksmanship was poor, but the dog paid no attention to it. "One of the few animals that show no fear of gunfire," muttered Kennedy, in undisguised admiration. "G-R-R-R," we heard from the police-dog.
