The Government has recognized heroism upon the water, and bestows medals of honor upon those persons who by extreme and heroic daring have endangered their lives in saving, or endeavoring to save, lives from the perils of the sea in the waters over which the United States has jurisdiction, or upon an American vessel.

Medals were struck with the customary vows for the long and auspicious reign of the young Cæsar; and as the people, who were not admitted into the secrets of the palace, still loved his virtues, and respected his dignity, a poet who solicits his recall from exile, adores with equal devotion the majesty of the father and that of the son.

The old mother halted at a sort of sheep pen by the roadside; when she rejoined us she was wiping her eyes. "That was my brother," she explained; "he was killed in the war;" for it is the custom to erect memorial stones by the roadside. Many of these are very quaint, sometimes painted with a soldier, or else with the rifle, sword, pistols and medals of the deceased.

I went first to a small beach, which is towards the head, where I found no good landing, on account of some rocks which every where lined the coast. I, however, put the boat's bow to the shore, and gave cloth, medals, etc. to some people who were there.

"So he would be," said the other man from his post by the door; "he's quite right." "And I'd sooner lose fifty medals," said Mr. Dix. "What's the good of me saving him for that?" A murmur of admiration at the mate's extraordinary nobility of character jarred harshly on the ears of Mr. Heard.

"At last!" sighed the worthy mayor; and in a lower tone he added, "the finest medals have their reverse." For the first time in his life, he seriously cursed his ambition, and regretted being the most important personage in Orcival. The judge of instruction of the tribunal at Corbeil, was M. Antoine Domini, a remarkable man, since called to higher functions.

"We'll have to start up some skating matches if good skating does really turn up," put in Dick Rover, who had just joined his two brothers in the gymnasium attached to Putnam Hall. "Don't you remember those matches we had last year?" "Certainly, Dick," answered Tom Rover. "Didn't I win one of the silver medals?"

The plants, birdskins, and insects have supplied a steady income. The plants cost labor; insects were easier to get. All the indian boys in the parish were supplied with poison-bottles and set to work; a stock of prints of saints, beads, medals, and crucifixes was doled out to the little collectors, according to the value of their trophies.
