It consists of a quadrangular prism, made of coral slabs six feet high, surmounted by a pyramid of Koudi wood of the same height, bearing on a little plate of lead the following inscription, A la Mémoire DE LA PÉROUSE, ET DE SES COMPAGNONS L'ASTROLABE 14 Mars, 1828.

The King decided that a voyage should be undertaken; two ships of the navy, LA BOUSSOLE and L'ASTROLABE, were selected for the purpose; and, on the recommendation of the Marquis de Castries remember Madame la Marquise! Laperouse was chosen for the command.

This fine butterfly* was found flying in considerable plenty in the woods of one of the islands of the Louisiade Archipelago; it forms a very interesting addition to a genus, of which but few species are known, and is allied to the Drusilla catops of Dr. Boisduval, described and figured in the Voyage de l'Astrolabe.

This too had its history, encircled as it is with a complete reef of coral, in some parts double. In the year 1785, two French vessels, which were commanded by Count La Perouse, and named 'La Boussole' and 'L'Astrolabe, had set forth from Brest on a voyage of discovery in the Pacific.

On the fifth day after their arrival, two strange ships were seen standing into the bay, which proved to be the La Boussole and L'Astrolabe under the command of Monsieur De la Peyrouse, and which have been long wishfully looked for by all the good and wise of Europe. February 1788 to April 1788 Lieutenant King visits Monsieur De la Peyrouse at Botany-Bay. Polite reception there.

The French ship of discovery, L'Astrolabe, also touched at Menado and procured collections.
