'You show me any country under the sun where they really know how to plow, and if I don't show you our mark on the plow they use, I'll eat that plow; and I won't ask for any Woostershyre sauce to flavor it up with, either. All this part of the river is rich in Indian history and traditions. Black Hawk's was once a puissant name hereabouts; as was Keokuk's, further down.

Keokuk's birth Kills a Sioux when fifteen years old Prevents the abandonment of the Sac village Bold manoeuvre with the Sioux Perils his life for the safety of his people Speech to the Menominies at Prairie des Chiens Called upon to lead his braves to join in the Black Hawk war Allays the excitement of his people on this subject Deposed from his post as head chief and a young man elected in his place Re-established in power Delivers up his nephew to the whites to be tried for murder Letter to the Governor of Illinois Council at Washington in 1837 Retorts upon the Sioux His visit to Boston His return home His personal appearance And his character as a war and peace chief.

In their report at the October term of the Warren Circuit Court, the Grand jurors say: "Six or seven Indians of Keokuk's band of Sac and Fox Indians who were not included in the war path under Black Hawk and other chiefs of the Sac and Fox, nation, came over from the western bank of the Mississippi river to the inhabited parts of Warren county, in said State, and unlawfully and feloniously murdered the said William Martin in the most barbarous manner.

There was no covert from behind which the Sacs could fight, and flight was impossible. Keokuk's mode of defence was as novel as ingenious.

"And I really think a trip of this kind would do me more good than just hanging round a poky newspaper office. Travel, and a different sphere Keokuk's a big town, and there seems to be a lot going on there. It's really a good chance to enlarge my field of vision to broaden my horizon don't you see, mother?" Mother bent her head lower over her work.

It required all of Keokuk's influence and moderation to prevent the whole nation from enlisting under the Black Hawk banner. He requested the agent of the American Government to send to his village, on the west side of the Mississippi, a white man who understood the Sac language, and who might bear witness to his, Keokuk's sincerity and faithfulness to the whites. Such a person was sent.

I prevailed upon some of Keokuk's band to return this spring to the Rock river village, but Keokuk himself would not come. I hoped that he would get permission to go to Washington to settle our affairs with our Great Father. I visited the agent at Rock Island. He was displeased because we had returned to our village, and told me that we must remove to the west of the Mississippi.

I would as soon think of making a treaty with that child, pointing to Keokuk's little boy, 'as with a Saukie or Musquakee. The Sioux were evidently gratified and excited by the sarcasms of their orators, while their opponents sat motionless, their dark eyes flashing, but their features as composed and stolid, as if they did not understand that disparaging language that was used.

When he was out on a canvass, his name was a lodestone which drew the farmers to his stump from fifty miles around. His theme was always politics. He used no notes, for a volcano does not need notes. In 1862, a son of Keokuk's late distinguished citizen, Mr. Claggett, gave me this incident concerning Dean A distinguished stranger was to address the house.

The war chief said that the object of this council was to deliver me up to Keokuk. He then read a paper, and directed me to follow Keokuk's advice, and be governed by his counsel in all things! In this speech he said much that was mortifying to my feelings, and I made an indignant reply.
