The Spirit of God acts in a very different manner in the one case, from what He doth in the other. He may indeed act upon the mind of a natural man, but He acts in the mind of a saint as an indwelling vital principle. But He unites Himself with the mind of a saint, takes him for his temple, actuates and influences him as a new supernatural principle of life and action.

Power comes through holy familiarity with God, personal relation to Christ, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Are we full of power in the Lord's service? What event intensified the issue between the king and the Covenanters? Wherein lay the moral strength of the Covenanters? How did they show their love for the Church of Christ? What aroused their jealousy for the Church?

God is, however, to be understood as subject, as the real subject, the transcendent thinking and knowing subject, indwelling in the world and making the world what it is, indwelling in us and making us what we are. We ourselves are subjects only in so far as we are parts of God. We think and know only in so far as God thinks and knows and acts and lives in us.

How striking is the contrast between the translation of Elijah and the Ascension of Christ! And then follows the other claim, that because of this continuous mutual indwelling there is perfect cooperation.

Whether it came not of an indwelling demon, or a legion of demons, I cannot tell God knows. Surely I was as one possessed. I was mad, whether for years, or but for moments who can tell? I cannot.

For in that death there lies the power that sweeps away all the impediments of man's sin, and in that life of the risen, glorified, indwelling Christ there lies the power which cleanses the inmost heart from 'all filthiness of flesh and spirit, and makes it possible for our mortal feet to walk on the immortal path, and for us, with all our unworthiness, with all our shrinking, to stand in His presence and not be ashamed or consumed.

And not only was it Pauline Beverly's face, with its softly blending colours, and its quiet, indwelling light, that floated before his mental vision, but he found that he remembered her words and even the tones of her voice, when the gay and occasionally witty talk of the others had gone the way of mortal breath.
