Raymond continued to growl, and the girls continued to scream and "squeal" with delight when the sloop heeled over, and when the spray drenched their water-proofs. The Rosabel was at least five miles from the land, still making things very lively on board, when a large schooner was seen dead ahead. "I've had enough of this thing," said Charley, clinging to the washboard behind him.

Presently the bright eyes disappeared, and now she saw that Bart lay stretched across the entrance to the cave, where the long shadow was now creeping down the slope. Inches by inches she ventured to sit up, and all it brought from Bart was a quick turn of the head and a warning growl.

"They might for a time, senor, but the probability is that they would come back again. They have smelt the mules, and are probably hungry. It is better to let them attack us at once and have done with it." A minute or two later there was a snarling growl. "They are jaguars," Dias said.

The preacher shoved some dirt over the embers with his foot, and Davis had just returned his watch to his pocket, when the sound of the crunching of gravel was heard from the bank just above the carcass. Davis looked up and could just make out a huge dark form on the edge of the bank. He raised his carbine and fired point blank at the dark mass, and the report was answered by an angry growl.

It was then that life seemed to come back into Jolly Roger's body. His gun fell, as if it was the last thing in the world to count for anything now, and with a choking cry he ran to Cassidy and dropped upon his knees beside him. "Cassidy Cassidy " he cried. "Good God, I didn't mean to do it! Cassidy, old pal " The agony in his voice stilled the growl in Peter's throat.

"Ah, deal o' good that's done," growled Dan, trying to drive the point of his pike into the torch again.

Bart suddenly sprang to his feet, for, studying the animal more closely, something familiar presented itself and he ran out into the middle of the road. "Come here good fellow!" he hailed coaxingly, as the animal approached. But with a slight growl, and eyeing him suspiciously, it made a detour in the road, passing him. "Lem Wacker's dog I am sure of that!" explained Bart, naturally excited.

The porters much excited, as they always are at the death of a lion wished to carry the whole body without skinning it, back to camp. While they were lashing it to a pole another lion began to growl hungrily. The night was dark, without a moon, and the work of getting back was hard for the porters, as well as rather terrifying to them.
