The leading circumstances connected with Captain Golownin's captivity were the following: In the year 1803, the Chamberlain Resanoff was sent by the Emperor Alexander, to endeavour to open friendly relations with Japan, and sailed from the eastern coasts in a merchant vessel belonging to the American Company.
Aside from their bonds, the captives were well treated, being supplied with three meals a day, consisting of rice gruel, soup made of radishes or other roots, a kind of macaroni, and a piece of fish. Mushrooms or hard-boiled eggs were sometimes supplied. Golownin's bitter complaints at length had the effect of a loosening of their bonds, which enabled them to get along more comfortably.
A French translation of this work was published in Paris in 1796, in 2 vols. 4to. enriched by the notes of Langles and La Marck. Golownin's Narrative of his Captivity in Japan, 1811-13. 2 vols. 8vo. Japan is a country so little accessible, that every work on it is acceptable.
