To the base ideal of perpetual tyranny both here and hereafter I oppose the pure ideal of absolute freedom freedom to each separate soul to work out for itself its own innate convictions freedom to form its independent destiny. Freedom in state, freedom in church, freedom in religion, literature, commerce, government freedom as boundless as the sunshine that fructifies the teeming earth!

Of this Nobility of ours, which fructifies into such fruits and so numerous, the Psalmist had perception when he composed that Psalm which begins: "O Lord our God, how admirable is Thy Name through all the Earth!" where he praises man, as if wondering at the Divine affection for this Human Creature, saying: "What is man, that Thou, God, dost visit him?

In them we see the moonbeams that play among the flowers and the lightning that rends the forest; the blossoms that filter from the trees and the avalanche that carries destruction; the rain that fructifies the earth and the hurricane that destroys. =Life in literature.= Back of these sights and sounds we discover men Cicero, Demosthenes, Homer, Isaiah, Shakespeare, Milton, Dante.

No matter how true what is learned to those who found it out and in whose experience it functioned, there is nothing which makes it knowledge to the pupils. It might as well be something about Mars or about some fanciful country unless it fructifies in the individual's own life. Weak plant that she was, in need of delicate care, sunshine and affection, he became for her all that her brother had, through circumstances, failed to be.

It is a mute exhortation, which has often more effect than the most eloquent and sublime sermons. To example and precept, the holy Patriarch added frequent and fervent prayers for the spiritual advancement of his children; well knowing that neither he who plants, nor he who waters, contributes to the fruit which the tree bears, but that the interior virtue which fructifies, comes from God.

Love is not an affair of reason, to be clipped and measured by logic and calculation; but a devouring, destroying passion, impatient of restraint, and utterly regardless of common sense. It is born of a look, of a smile, of a sigh, of a word; it springs up and fructifies more speedily than did Jonah's gourd, and none can say how it begins or how it will end.

And exactly in the same manner as with gregarious animals, ants or bees, the separate individuals divide the labor among them. The queen lays the egg, the drone fructifies it; the bee works his whole life long. And precisely this thing takes place in mankind and in human societies.

In those far lands I reveled in the ambrosial food that fructifies the soul, the mind, the heart.
