Recent investigations make it probable that certain pictures which have for generations been attributed to Frans Hals were the work of Judith Leyster. In 1893 a most interesting lawsuit, which occurred in London and was reported in the Times, concerned a picture known as "The Fiddlers," which had been sold as a work of Frans Hals for £4,500.

The monogram on the picture was called that of Frans Hals, but as reproduced and explained by C. Hofstede de Groot in the "Jahrbuch für Königlich-preussischen Kunst-Sammlungen" for 1893, it seems evident that the signature is J. L. and not F. H.

To view five Lucas van Leydens in one gallery is not an everyday event. His engravings are rare enough that is, in good states; "ghosts" are aplenty and his paintings rarer. Here they are chiefly portraits. Rachel Ruysch, the flower painter, has a superior in Judith Lyster, a pupil of Frans Hals. She was born at Haarlem, or Zaandam, about 1600, and died 1660. She married the painter Jan Molener.

The Sistine Madonna is generally regarded as beautiful. But what is the beauty in the unspeakable witch on the canvas of Frans Hals? Harmony of color and of composition is employed by Raphael in the rendering of a figure and in the expression of an emotion both of which relate themselves to the veneration of mankind.
