The existence of grave constitutional disease, such as Bright's disease, diabetes, syphilis, scurvy, or alcoholism, also impedes healing. Infection by disease-producing micro-organisms or pathogenic bacteria is, however, the most potent factor in disturbing the natural process of repair in wounds.

The spread of boils may be unwittingly promoted by the use of a domestic poultice or the wearing of infected underclothing. While boils are frequently met with in debilitated persons, and particularly in those suffering from diabetes or Bright's disease, they also occur in those who enjoy vigorous health.

I have of late diminished the quantity, for fear of a weakness inductive to a diabetes a disease which broke up my father's health, though one of the most temperate men who ever lived. I smoke a couple of cigars instead, which operates equally as a sedative "Just to drive the cold winter away, And drown the fatigues of the day."

If this symptom is found to be related to others in such a way as to justify the diagnosis of diabetes, a therapeutic problem arises, that of adjusting the chemistry of the body. The prognosis depends not on the disease but the interreaction of the organism and the morbid process. Both in diagnosis and treatment an individual factor, the patient’s metabolism, is of prime importance.

Romarin had thrown up his handsome head. "Well, well!" he murmured incredulously. "Why 'well, well'?" Marsden demanded.... "But, of course, you never did and never will know what I meant." "By Romance? ... No, I can't say that I did; but as I conceived it, it was something that began in appetite and ended in diabetes." "Not philosophic, eh?" Marsden inquired, picking up a chicken bone.

Quackenbos of New York, for instance, gives to some of his diabetes patients a hypnotic suggestion by the following words: "If your pancreas be crippled in its production of the natural ferment which is given off to blood and lymph and which conditions the normal condition of sugar in the body or restrains the output of sugar from the liver tissues, you will see that it forthwith pours into your blood or lymph the sufficient quantity of sugar oxidizing ferments."

And I'll risk my reputation on your death being no less in the ordinary course of nature than his honor's, and very likely for he looks like a diabetes patient not so soon." These anticipations often prove well grounded. No one in the court room, therefore, is often more cheerful and confident than is the prisoner doomed to the noose or the chair.

Fats and Unguents never appear in their Chirurgery, when the Skin is once broke. They are never troubled with the Scurvy, Dropsy, nor Stone. The Phthisick, Asthma, and Diabetes, they are wholly Strangers to; neither do I remember I ever saw one Paralytick amongst them. The Gout, I cannot be certain whether they know what it is, or not. I never saw but one or two thus afflicted.

XX. 4. on Vertigo; and which is more fully explained in Section XXIX. on Diabetes. In this vertigo from internal causes we see objects double, as two candles instead of one, which is thus explained. Two lines drawn through the axes of our two eyes meet at the object we attend to: this angle of the optic axes increases or diminishes with the less or greater distances of objects.

Marsden was already well into his tale... The frightful unction with which he told it appalled Romarin. It was as he had said there was nothing he had not done and did not exult in with a sickening exultation. It had, indeed, ended in diabetes. In the pitiful hunting down of sensation to the last inch he had been fiendishly ingenious and utterly unimaginative.
