I took my drive along the valley of the Grande Morin in the afternoon yesterday. The wide plains of the valley are being ploughed, and the big horses dragging ploughs across the wide fields did look lovely just like a Millet or a Daubigny canvas. Since I wrote you I have been across to the battlefield again, to accompany a friend who came out from Paris. It was all like a new picture.
Then came Corot, Daubigny, Diaz and others of giant stature, to Barbizon, and when they went back to Paris they told of Millet and his work. And then we find Meissonier, the proud, knocking at the gate of Le Grand Rustique. It is pleasant to recall that Americans were among the first to recognize the value of Millet's art.
The Museum of the Luxembourg containing several pictures by modern artists, whose merits he recognized, was frequently visited by us and he admired heartily among others, Rosa Bonheur, Daubigny, Charles Jacque, and especially Troyon, whose works went far to shake his faith in topographic painting, and sowed the first seeds of the French school's influence on his mind.
Rousseau, Diaz and Daubigny, all younger men than Corot, made comfortable fortunes long before Corot got the speaker's eye; and when at last recognition came to him, not the least of their claim to greatness was that they had worked with him.
There were Steinheil, Trimolet, Daumier, Daubigny, Deschaumaes and Meissonier, all aged about twenty, strong, sturdy, sincere and innocently ignorant all bound they would be artists. Altogether an adequate exhibition. Honoré Daumier, who died February 11, 1879, was almost the last of the giants of 1830, though he outlived many of them. He was blind and lonely at the end. Corot died 1875; Daubigny, his companion, 1878; Millet, 1875, and Rousseau, with whom he corresponded, died 1867.
