It is true that a literal resuscitation of Christian corpses on some future Day of Resurrection would be neither possible nor desirable. Nevertheless the Christian doctrine of the life to come involves more than a bare assertion of the immortality of the soul. The body is the embodiment or vehicle of the spirit; the spirit disembodied would be a mere wraith, a phantasm of the living man.

Too true! and our merchants, brokers, bankers, projectors of Companies, parade our City to remind us of the poor steamed fellows trooping out of the burst-boiler-room of the big ship Leviathan, in old years; a shade or two paler than the crowd o' the passengers, apparently alive and conversible, but corpses, all of them to lie their length in fifteen minutes.

He also concluded that the battle had taken place quite early, perhaps earlier than Zbyszko's fight, for the corpses were livid and swollen, and some of them torn by wolves, that scattered in the thickets at the approach of armed men. In face of these circumstances Zbyszko resolved not to wait for Skirwoilla, but to return to the original safe camp.

Some of these were citizens of Richmond, who believed that the Federals would occupy the city in a few days, and enable them to resume their professions and homes. The lower decks were occupied by negroes. The boat was heavily freighted, and among the parcels that littered the hold and steerage, I noticed scores of box coffins for the removal of corpses from the field to the North.

"It was," said he to the author, "the first joyous sound I had heard for six months." From Roscommon the brief, but terrible, tidings came that whole families, who had retired to rest at night, were corpses in the morning; and were frequently left unburied for many days, for want of coffins in which to inter them.

In the book that our teachers worship, I have heard it read, that "the voice of blood crieth from the ground!" This is the voice Hermanric, this is the voice that I have heard! I have dreamed that I walked on a shore of corpses, by a sea of blood I have seen, arising from that sea, my husband's and my children's bodies, gashed throughout with Roman wounds!

Don't mind the rats. Cover your head well up. They won't touch your face then." I crawled in on to my bed. Then I noticed a peculiar and decidedly unpleasant smell. "Have you got any corpses here?" I asked him. "Yes, I believe so," he said. "You see the other entrance has been blown in. It's the other end of your bed, and I believe some Bosches were buried in the débris.
