In my native mountains, the Catskills, all those peaceful pastoral valleys, with their farms and homesteads, lie two or three thousand feet below the original surface of the land. Could the land be restored again to its first condition in Devonian times, probably the fields where I hoed corn and potatoes as a boy would be buried one or two miles beneath the rocks.

Emmer itself is not a new grain, having been grown for centuries in Russia and southern Europe, and it is believed to have been the corn of Pliny, which he said was used by the Latins for several centuries before they knew how to make bread. Several years ago emmer began receiving attention as a stock food.

Isom looked back over his shoulder. "Git to work!" he yelled. "You didn't promise me what I asked," said Joe, quietly. "No, and that ain't all!" returned Isom. The tall corn swallowed Isom and his horse as the sea swallowed Pharaoh and his host.

Being asked what fault he had to find, he answered, that every one knew that a bird never settles on an ear of corn, but it must bend under the weight; whereas this painter had represented the ear of corn bolt upright, though loaded with a bird. The objection was held just, and the painter was dismissed without reward.

Percy paused: "You know, Mother, that our corn has averaged some less than fifty bushels per acre for the last five years, and, as you say, the lower field has been much better than the old land, and I think you are quite right in your belief that as an average the land is growing poorer, although we cultivate better than we used to do, and our seed corn is of the best variety and saved with much care.

Sus. Keep in yer breath a minute, an' push yer ribs out. It's one on 'em's got a top o' the other. Mat. Such a grand creature! And her colour coming and going like the shadows on the corn! It's no wonder he forgot poor me. But it'll burn itself out afore long. Sus. Don't ye talk like that, Mattie; I can't abear it. Mat. If I was dressed like her, though, and could get my colour back! But laws!

Guy Rivers has plenty to eat, but he cursed Chub's mother." "Well, show us where he is, and we'll give you plenty to eat. Plenty of potatoes and corn," was the promise of the party. "And build up Chub's house that the fire burnt? Chub lives in the tree now. Guy Rivers' man burnt Chub's house, 'cause he said Chub was sassy."

Not far from the church we called upon a family of large and wealthy farmers, owners of the soil they cultivate, millionaires by comparison with our neighbours at Bourron. We arrived in the midst of a busy time, a steam corn thresher plying in the vast farm-yard.

On Titicaca Island I saw native women, who had just harvested their maize, engaged in shucking and drying ears of corn which varied in length from one to three inches. To be sure this miniature corn has the advantage of maturing in sixty days, but good soil and fertilizers would double its size and productiveness. Naturally these Indians always feel themselves at the mercy of the elements.

And then, if you wash your feet in cold water every day, and put some vaseline or sweet oil on the hard spot night or morning, the corn will probably go away. Not only your shoes, but all of your clothing must be comfortable if your skin and the parts under it are to do their work well.
