Thus some of the little "coralline polyps" and other most beautiful little marine flower-like polyps attached to rocks, weeds, and shells in the sea reproduce by budding and division. But after a period of such growth and such budding they produce on their stalks jelly-fish!

As I had come so far, I thought we might go ashore and look at the town, which was found greatly improved since I last saw it, by the addition of several coralline houses and a dockyard. The natives were building a dhow with Lindi and Madagascar timber.

It is, however, natural to consider a polypus, furnished with a mouth, intestines, and other organs, as a distinct individual, whereas the individuality of a leaf-bud is not easily realised, so that the union of separate individuals in a common body is more striking in a coralline than in a tree.

The cold seems to have gone on increasing from the time of the Coralline to that of the Norwich Crag, and became more and more severe, not perhaps without some oscillations of temperature, until it reached its maximum in what has been called the Glacial period, or at the close of the Newer Pliocene, and in the Post-pliocene periods.

It possesses gold, copper, and coal, hot springs and geysers, sedimentary and volcanic rocks and coralline limestone, alluvial plains, abrupt hills and lofty mountains, a moist climate, and a grand and luxuriant forest vegetation. The few days I stayed here produced me several new insects, but scarcely any birds. Butterflies and birds are in fact remarkably scarce in these forests.

He has not himself given us an analysis of the results of his treatise, but the following tables have been drawn up for me by Mr. Wood's careful examination of 442 species of mollusca has led. Brachiopoda : 6. Lamellibranchia : 206. Gasteropoda : 230. Norwich Crag : 81. Red Crag : 225. Coralline Crag : 327. Norwich Crag : 69 : 12 : 85%. Red Crag : 130 : 95 : 57%. Coralline Crag : 168 : 159 : 51%.

Brachiopods: 1 : 0. Univalves: 127 : 33. Brachiopods: 1 : 1. CORALLINE CRAG: Bivalves: 161 : 47. Univalves: 184 : 60 Brachiopods: 5 : 3 PERCENTAGE OF SHELLS NOT KNOWN AS LIVING : 31.5

The top is reached by a flight of steps cut in the coralline rock, all these steps being of the same size and perfectly squared and polished. Stone statues on Easter Island. On a rock at the entrance to the port of Sydney a kangaroo is sculptured. There are altogether some four hundred of them, forming groups in different parts of the island.

Section near Woodbridge, in Suffolk. Red Crag. b. Coralline Crag. c. At D there was not only seen a distinct cliff, eight or ten feet high, of Coralline Crag, running in a direction N.E. and S.W., against which the Red Crag abuts with its horizontal layers, but this cliff occasionally overhangs.

The fish is excellent and abundant; lobsters are caught by night near the reef, and oysters in the bay when the tide is out. Dredging the sand-bar and cutting a passage in the soft coralline reef will give excellent shelter and, some say, a depth of seventeen fathoms. Our first care was to walk straight into the sea, travelling clothes and all.
