Four hundred Versailles Chasseurs are said to have deserted from their own side into Paris yesterday. Batteries of 30 guns have been established at the Dauphine Gate. The Cri du peuple says the Committee have determined rather to blow up Paris than capitulate. A requisition has been made of the silver candlesticks at the Church of Notre Dame des Victoires.

But the court, which feared the triumph of the constitutionalists, caused Lafayette's projects to fail; he had appointed a review, which it contrived to prevent by its influence over the officers of the royalist battalions. The grenadiers and chasseurs, picked companies still better disposed than the rest, were to assemble at his residence and proceed against the clubs; scarcely thirty men came.

A voice in the crowd exclaimed: "Poor devil!" Then another, a tremulous voice, choking with emotion, asked timidly: "Is it quite certain that he's dead?" I was peculiarly fortunate on two occasions, by happening to come after the enemy when they had left loaded waggons and forage bundles.

The Emperor ordered me to take some of the Mamelukes, two squadrons of chasseurs, and one of grenadiers of the Guard, and to go and reconnoitre the state of things. I set off at full gallop, and soon discovered the disaster. The Russian cavalry had penetrated our squares, and was sabring our men.
