In the little chalet close to the house the Queen loved to carry on her correspondence on summer-days, rather than to write within palace walls, because she, whose life has been pure and candid as the day, has always loved dearly the open air of heaven.

In front, stretching out into the sea, was a stone pier, built by Jacques' father many a year ago. The Châlet looked singularly quiet and deserted, for all the shutters had been closed in order to shut out the midday heat. Jacques de Wissant became vaguely uneasy. He reconsidered his plan of action.

It was with relief that they both became aware a few moments later that they were on the outskirts of Lacville. "Here is the Châlet des Muguets!" exclaimed Sylvia. "Isn't it a funny little place?" The English lawyer stared at the bright pink building; with curiosity and amusement.

At last she fell into a troubled sleep, and dreamt a disturbing dream. She found herself wandering about the Châlet des Muguets, trying to find a way out of the locked and shuttered building. The ugly little rooms were empty. It was winter, and she was shivering with cold. Someone must have locked her in by mistake. She had been forgotten.... "Toc, toc, toc!" at the door.

The daughter of the old woman used to pull my chair sometimes down to the village, and I have sat in cheap inns and talked to servants. There is a fresh-water pan there, it is all covered with snow now, and beside it there is a big house that they call the Pink Chalet. I do not know much about it, except that rich folk live in it, for I know the other houses and they are harmless.

The two rivals, still intimate friends, intended to pay their first visit at the Chalet on the evening of the day succeeding their arrival. They had spent Sunday and part of Monday in unpacking and arranging Madame Amaury's house for a month's stay.

"The Chalet Cycle is the nearest," she volunteered, grasping the situation, and pointing to a path opening to the right as she spoke. "Is that where he has taken the child?" I asked, hurriedly. "No, Monsieur Susette has gone home. It is only a little way." I plunged on through the wet grass, my eyes on the opening through the trees, the rain pouring from my umbrella.

On going into the CHALET above the fall, we were informed that a BRUECKE had broken down near Guttanen, and that it would be impossible to proceed for some time; accordingly we were kept in our drenched condition for EIN STUNDE, when some VOYAGEURS arrived from Meiringen, and told us that there had been a trifling accident, ABER that we could now cross.

He was scarcely hidden there when he heard the chase sweep by, the detectives and the keepers losing scent, passing the chalet and rushing in the direction of the Paris ramparts.

This second man had also armed himself with a chamois-gun, which slipped out of his hands as he fell wounded to the ground. Springing forward Kennedy wrenched it out of his relaxing grasp, and presented it full at the head of the other, who, half-stunned with the blow he had received from the heavy iron-shod point of the ashen alpenstock, was crouching for concealment in the corner of the chalet.
