There were times when the soft floods of color in the crimson and purple flames, or the clear depth of amber in the water below the bridge, had somehow given him a glimpse of another world than this, of an infinite depth of beauty and of quiet somewhere, somewhere, a depth of quiet and rest and love. Looking up now, it became strangely real.

Mitchell said she knew 'is bark was worse than 'is bite, and asked 'im who was wasting his money now? "You meet me at London Bridge Station at two o'clock," ses Uncle Joe, getting up to go. "It ain't extravagance for a man as can afford it."

When de Lescure saw that his men hesitated, he said, "Come my men, forward with 'Marie Jeanne, we will soon pick their locks for them," and rushed on the bridge alone; seeing that no one followed him he returned, and said to Denot: "We must shew them an example, Adolphe; we will run to the other side of the bridge and return; after that, they will follow us."

Not satisfied with driving back the Spaniards from the bridge, the gallant little company pursued them for a good mile, and would have done more but they saw in the distance a great company of seven or eight hundred Spanish horsemen.

And now, as they whirled along, even Dabney's face paled a little. "I must reach the bridge before he does: he's just stupid enough to keep right on." It was very "stupid," indeed, for the driver of that one-horse "truck-wagon" to try and reach the little narrow unrailed bridge first. It was an old, used-up sort of a bridge, at best. Dab loosened the reins a little, but could not use his whip.

He intended to go just far enough into this wood for a glimpse of the forest shade which his scouting had taught him to love, and then to return to headquarters for his machine. Crossing a plank bridge across a narrow stream, he paused in the edge of the woods and listened to the firing which still occurred at intervals in the higher ground beyond.

They called him, ran after him, and then all three remained talking together for a few minutes. The ground-floor gallery stretched away, empty, with its sanded pavement, and the pale light streaming through its large round windows. One might have fancied oneself under a railway bridge.

There had sometimes been a question whether a rail should not be placed for protection along the top of this cliff, but nothing of the kind had yet been done. The boys were not supposed to play in this field, which was on the other side of the river, and could only be reached by the bridge through the parsonage garden.

"He will be gone two or three hours," said a man with a stone hammer in his hand. "What shall we do now?" asked Rollo, addressing Jonas, after a short pause. "Keep on until we find him," replied Jonas. "But you may stay here and see them build the bridge, while I go after the carpenter." Accordingly Jonas went on, leaving Rollo seated upon a bank watching the work.

But after dinner to cards: and about five o'clock, by water down to Greenwich; and up to the top of the hill, and there played upon the ground at cards. And so to the Cherry Garden, and then by water singing finely to the Bridge, and there landed; and so took boat again, and to Somerset House.
