We read that there is a city that has foundations; grace is one, Christ another, and the truth of all the prophets and apostles, as to their true doctrine, another, &c. There is another thing to be seen at the bottom of this holy river, and that is, the glory of God; we are saved, saved by grace, saved by grace through the redemption that is in Christ to the praise and glory of God.

For forty years had he followed the apostles' calling on "this yere Ohio," and the fishing was never so poor as now yes, sir! hard times had struck his business, just like other folks'. He thought the oil wells were tainting the water, and the fish wouldn't breed and the iron slag, too, was spoiling the river, and he knew it.

The successor of the apostles might have inculcated with decent firmness the guilt of blood, and the necessity of repentance; he is content to celebrate the deliverance of the people and the fall of the oppressor; to rejoice that the piety and benignity of Phocas have been raised by Providence to the Imperial throne; to pray that his hands may be strengthened against all his enemies; and to express a wish, perhaps a prophecy, that, after a long and triumphant reign, he may be transferred from a temporal to an everlasting kingdom.

With these words St. Peter meets those of whom he has just spoken, who say: "The Apostles have said much about the Last Day coming quickly, and yet so long a time is past, and still all continues as heretofore." And he has quoted this passage from Moses, in the lxxxix. Ps., where he says: "A thousand years are in thine eyes as yesterday, when it is past." This is the scope of it.

To justify his usurped primacy in the Church the Pope claims that Peter was the chief of the apostles. This is an impudent falsehood. For he that wrought effectually in Peter. With these words Paul refutes another argument of the false apostles.

It was rich in relics. The people were as ignorant as wooden images, but they had in their possession the dried bodies of seven apostles the bones of many of the infants slain by Herod part of a dress of the Virgin Mary, and lots of skulls and skeletons of the infallible idiots known as saints.

The missions of these men had many points of resemblance; but while one, after a trial of more than two years and a half, failed to accomplish his heroic object, and returned to the land of his birth to be honored with a mitre in the see of Cloyne, the other was blessed in his work, and lived to behold the Church in America united in the adoption of a revised liturgy, and settled upon the old "foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner-stone."

Paul of lying, and thereby favoring deceit. In the second place, are you quite sure that they were in the habit of invoking saints?" "Certainly, Mary; for it is undeniable that St. Augustine in his Meditations calls on the Blessed Virgin, and all the angels and apostles in heaven, to intercede with God in his behalf.

I have urged this point in various ways, and now I am showing the light which the Canons of the Apostles throw upon it. There is no reasonable doubt that they represent to us, on the whole, and as far as they go, the outward face of Christianity in the first centuries; now will the Protestant venture to say that he recognizes in it any likeness of his own Religion?

And on the other hand, he speaks of believing husbands who had heathen wives; for it often occurred while the Apostles preached the Gospel among the heathen, that one was a Christian and the other not. If it then was commanded that the wife should be subject to the husband, how much more must it be so ordered now. Therefore it is the woman's duty, St.
