What is it in the Frenchwoman which makes her so utterly unique? A daughter in one of Anatole France's books says to her mother: "Tu es pour les bijoux, je suis pour les dessous." The Frenchwoman spiritually is pour les dessous. There is in her a kind of inherited, conservative, clever, dainty capability; no matter where you go in France, or in what class country or town you find it.

The thought immediately occurred to him that his promise to Prince Andrew was of no account, because before he gave it he had already promised Prince Anatole to come to his gathering; "besides," thought he, "all such 'words of honor' are conventional things with no definite meaning, especially if one considers that by tomorrow one may be dead, or something so extraordinary may happen to one that honor and dishonor will be all the same!"

H.G. Wells and Anatole France have pre-figured that result in fiction; and I cannot deny the strength of its probability; for if England and Germany can find no better way of celebrating their arrival at the highest point of civilization yet attained than setting out to blow one another to fragments with fulminates, it would seem that the peace of the neutral States is the result, not of their being more civilized, but less heavily armed.

The latest volume of M. Anatole France purports, by the declaration of its title-page, to contain several profitable narratives.

Huneker must be reckoned the most brilliant of all living writers on matters musical." Academy, London. "No modern musical critic has shown greater ingenuity in the attempt to correlate the literary and musical tendencies of the nineteenth century." Spectator, London. Stendhal, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Anatole France, Huysmans, Barrès, Hello, Blake, Nietzsche, Ibsen and Max Stirner.

Not only were they perfectly patient now when summoned before the officers of justice, they were most eager to give every assistance to the law, to go beyond the mere letter, and, if needs be, volunteer information. The first called in was the elder, M. Anatole Lafolay, a true Parisian bourgeois, fat and comfortable, unctuous in speech, and exceedingly deferential.

There are abundant signs that the generation just coming forward will rejoice in such a pose. It is observable now in the colleges, where the young literati turn up their noses at everything American, magazines, best-sellers, or one-hundred-night plays, and resort for inspiration to the English school of anti-Victorians: to Remy de Gourmont, to Anatole France.

The same glance which showed him the gray automobile stealing softly across the network of car-lines of one of the city's main thoroughfares revealed a roundsman crossing the square. "Friend Anatole may be heeled," he said. "Let's get help." Leaning out, he shouted to Arthur, whose other name was Brodie: "Pull in alongside the cop. I want to speak to him."

But let me take an illustration of what I mean by these two kinds of finality that Art may have, and show that in essence they are but two halves of the same thing. The term "a work of Art" will not be denied, I think, to that early novel of M. Anatole France, "Le Lys Rouge." Now, that novel has positive finality, since the spiritual conclusion from its premises strikes one as true.

Why do you lay such stress on this?" he asked. "Do as I tell you first, the papers. I will explain by-and-by." There was no mistaking Anatole, and Hyde accordingly hastened upstairs. Anatole indicated the door of an antechamber, which Hyde entered alone.
