The bill was finally perfected in a conference committee and ended by reducing the total internal revenue to $265,920,474 per annum with all allowance made for the growth of the country and the elasticity of Government receipts. Not satisfied with the large reduction of taxes made at the first session after the close of the war, Congress resumed the subject at the second session.

Turning now to Texas we find that this State has nearly doubled its enrollment of colored pupils in three years, which now number 62,040, with 1,696 licensed colored teachers who receive on an average, $41.73 per month. Virginia has 111,114 out of a school population of 265,249 with 1,734 colored teachers who receive $28.65 per month.

The missing were nearly all from Sigel's column. Two regiments in General Lyon's column, the First Missouri and the First Kansas, lost together 153 killed and 395 wounded. General Price reported the loss of his Missouri troops, 156 killed, 517 wounded, and 30 missing. General McCulloch reported his entire loss as 265 killed, 800 wounded, and 30 missing. The death of General Lyon was a severe loss.
