In vol. ii. p. 205 et seqq. of his History of Egypt, Professor Petrie maintains the same views. The same volume also contains his earlier synopsis of the Tell el Amarna tablets. Professor Maspero’s account of the historical bearing of these tablets is worked into the second volume of his great Histoire Ancienne des Peuples de l’Orient, which is entitled Les Premières Mélées des Peuples.

Observing the surprise which these words excited, he continued: "Say not that I have lost my reason: I tell you the truth. In the April of the following year, 1500, the new task was given. The payment for the roof was to have been 205 ducats; for the walls they offered 575. Dwight of New York sought to limit the legal-tender quality of the silver dollar to $50, and for larger sums to make it receivable at its value in gold. A motion by Mr. Hewitt of New York to lay the bill on the table was lost by ayes 71, noes 205.

He had, however, more reason to be gratified than disappointed with the result; for, though in plain fact he was a raw and unknown youngster, he stood third upon a list of eight candidates, receiving 657 votes; and out of 208 votes cast in his own county he scored 205. In this there was ample encouragement for the future.

The result of the vote was a strange surprise to all parties, and one of the greatest ever experienced in Parliamentary history. The vote for Mr. Roebuck's committee was 205; and against it, 148; a majority against the ministry of 157. "The scene was a peculiar and probably an unparalleled one.
