Walter in reply to mine of grief at the death of MacDonald, tells the story of their relation better than I can. Bearwood, December 19, 1889. Dear Mr. Stillman, One appreciates true sympathy at such a time as this, and none that I have received has touched me more than yours. It is sad indeed to go down to the office and be no more greeted with MacDonald's cheery voice and kindly look.

When I found that I was wrong, I wrote to my poet: Dec. 19th, 1889. At first I thought your poem must have been a joke, written by some one who knew of my feelings for you and my visit to Hawarden; but, when I saw the signature and the post-mark, I was convinced it could be but from you.

The Church of Holy Trinity, just above the square, is in an unusual style of architecture; its two tall towers of red brick faced with stone add an imposing detail to the architecture of the street. The first church was consecrated in 1830, but pulled down in 1889 and replaced by the present one, due to the generosity of Earl Cadogan.

Then only is life itself; then only is it right, is it one; then only is it as designed and necessitated by the eternal life-outgiving Life. Whereto then we have attained let us walk by that same! Sun and wind and rain, the Lord Is to seed his Father buried For he is the living Word, And the quickening Spirit. BORDIGHERA: May 3, 1889.

The work in elocution and oratory was definitely established with the appointment in 1889 of Thomas C. Trueblood, M.A., Earlham, '85, who had for some years held a lectureship in the University, as Assistant Professor of Elocution and in 1892 as full Professor of Oratory.

Emilie de Morsier, who afterward was the soul of the International Congress of 1889, at Paris; Mme. Pauline Kergomard, the first woman to be made a member of the Superior Council of public Instruction in France, and Mme. Henri Gréville, the novelist. Among the American guests at our various Wednesday receptions were Mr. and Mrs. John Bigelow, Mr. and Mrs. James G. Blaine, Mr.
