The bruise gradually assumed such a serious condition that it ended his life. Jean Baptiste Senaillé, who was a pupil of Anêt, was born in 1687, and turned to the Italian school. In 1719 he entered the service of the Duke of Orleans. Francesco Geminiani was considered the ablest of the pupils of Corelli, and was born about 1680.

Before retiring into private life, however, he poured out in his Couches de l'Académie a torrent of poison, which was distilled through the presses of Amsterdam in 1687.

The Lucky Chance; or, An Alderman's Bargain, produced at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1687, was, with the exception of the disapproval of a certain pudibond clique, received with great favour, and kept the stage for a decade or more. During the summer season of 1718 there was, on 24 July, a revival, 'not acted twenty years, of this witty comedy at Lincoln's Inn Fields.

His health, it was said, had suffered from his confinement; but the only serious illness which we hear of, was an attack of 'sweating sickness, which came upon him in 1687, and from which he never thoroughly recovered. He was then fifty-nine, and in the next year he died. His end was characteristic. It was brought on by exposure when he was engaged in an act of charity.

Mrs. Booty, hearing of this remark, sued Barnaby for libel, putting her damages at 1000 pounds.

Indeed Castelmaine's preparations for that great occasion were so sumptuous that, though commenced at Easter 1686, they were not complete till the following November; and in November the Pope had, or pretended to have, an attack of gout which caused another postponement. In January 1687, at length, the solemn introduction and homage were performed with unusual pomp.

The other plot, of slaves alone, in the "Northern Neck" of the colony in 1687, appears to have been of no more than local concern. The punishments meted out on either occasion are unknown. The eighteenth century, with its multiplication of slaves, saw somewhat more frequent plots in its early decades.

A less inert nature might well have remained long in suspense when drawn in opposite directions by motives so strong and so respectable. But the influence of the Churchills decided the question; and their patroness became an important member of that extensive league of which the Prince of Orange was the head.
