Früher hatte die Stadt zwei starke Forts, am nordöstlichen Eck das sogenannte spanische, welches im Jahre 1863 explodirte und das im Südostwinkel der Stadt, welches aber schon seit Jahren zum Schloss des Gouverneurs umgebaut worden ist.
