The introduction to each Vision is evidently written with elaborate care, and exquisitely polished "ne quid possit per leve morari," and scene follows scene, painted in words which present them most vividly before one's eyes, whilst the force and liveliness of his diction sustain unflagging interest throughout.

"Vae tibi, vae misero, nisi circumspexeris artes Femineas, nam nulla salus quin femina possit Tradere, nulla fides quin" "Quin," he repeated. In writing soliloquies, his trouble was to curb inspiration. The thought that he was addressing his heir-presumptive now heir-only-too-apparent gave him pause. Nor, he reflected, was he addressing this brute only, but a huge posthumous audience.

His jurisdiction was confined to the small fortified towns and villages of the civitas, where he administered justice and collected fines, forfeitures, etc., in much the same manner as did the judex in the largest town of the civitas; his judgments, however, were not final, but always subject to appeal to a higher authority: "Si vero talis causa fuerit, quod ipse Sculdahis minime deliberare possit, dirigat ambas partes ad judicem suum."

I made the best, and confirmed the same that they had shewed his Grace before; and how it would never have been so obtained.

And this is not only true of the pyramids of Egypt, and certain other works of human industry, that time seems to have no force to destroy. It is often true of a single sentence, a single word, which the multitudinous sea is incapable of washing away: Quod non imber edax, non Aquilo impotens Possit diruere, aut innumerabilis Annorum series, et fuga temporum.

"Oh, if that is it," cried poor Campian, "give her ten, give her ten, brother Pars Morgans, I mean; and take care of your shins, Offa Cerbero, you know Oh, virago! Furens quid faemina possit! Certainly she is some Lamia, some Gorgon, some "
