A copious index volume was issued in 1832. Formal grants under the great seal called Charters, characterised by a "salutation" clause, the names of attesting witnesses, and, under Henry III. after 1227, by the final formula data per manum nostram apud, etc., and implying normally the presence of the king, are contained in the CHARTER ROLLS, extant from the reign of John onwards.

For he declared unto us that it was clearly written in the Pope's letter that those would certainly share in the exceeding generous indulgences and treasures of the Church and the merits of Christ qui porrigerent manum adjutricem, who offered a helping hand; that is, those who would give money. And all that they told me in German, for there was not one among them who could have spoken three Latin words correctly with any one.

With some variation of details at different periods, the same system prevailed essentially at Rome, down to the time when Rome became Christian. "Ay, and aren't we every bit as good as they are, if you go to that? haven't we sowls to be saved as well as themselves?" "'As good as they are! as good as the clargy!! Manum a yea agus a wurrah!* listen to what he says! Phaddhy, take care of yourself, you've got rich, now; but for all that, take care of yourself. The gateway is now demolished; and probably most of its garrison lie as low as the fortress. You taught me to keep my fingers off the weak, and to clench my fist against the strong to carry no tales out of school to stand forth like a true man obey the stern order of a PANDE MANUM, and endure my pawmies without wincing, like one that is determined not to be the better for them.

The lex Canuleia, A.U.C. 309, authorized connubium between patricians and plebeians, and the lex Julia, A.U.C. 757, allowed it between freedmen and freeborn. By the conventio in manum, a wife passed out of her family into that of her husband, who acquired all her property; without it, the woman remained in the power of her father, and retained the free disposition of her property.

I shall discuss these matters at greater length when I treat of women and the management of their property. Dio, 54, 16. Pomponius in Dig., 23, 2, 4. Gaius, i, 113.
