There was plenty of grass in the valleys of the creeks. To the South-West on the hills the grasses were Restio, Xerotes, and a spiny grass, which neither the horses nor the sheep would eat. August 17. This morning we commenced to prepare our breakfast of horse-flesh.
The large mats used as sails, also for sleeping under in wet weather, are made by the women from the fallen leaves of the pandanus the common basket from the rush-like leaves of Xerotes banksii ? and the water basket from the sheath of the leaf of the Seaforthia palm. Xyris, Philydrum, a species of Xerotes, and an aromatic spreading herb, grew in great abundance round the water. I found a great quantity of the latter in the stomach of the emu. A species of Crotolaria, two or three feet high, with simple woolly oblong or oblongo-lanceolate leaves, and with a beautiful green blossom of the form and size of that of Kennedya rubicunda, grew in the bed of the river.
