But will not the discovery of all this superfluous tension make one self-conscious? Certainly it will for a time, and it must do so. You must be conscious of a smooch on your face in order to wash it off, and when the face is clean you think no more of it. So you must see an evil before you can shun it.

And yet this is not an exaggeration of what most of us do when our attention is called to defects of character. When we excuse and explain and tell how clean the other side of our face is, we are putting ourselves positively on the side of the smooch.

Doris straightens up, brushes her eyes clear, and makes a brave stab at bein' dignified. "Snee," says she, real reprovin'. "I I beg pardon, ma'am," says Cyril, edgin' out and revealin' a broad black smooch on his shirt-front as well as a few other un-butlery signs. "Why, whatever has happened to yon?" demands Doris.

The others followed, and stood about outside, listening with curiosity sanctified by intensest sympathy. One nervous-faced boy leaped on the slant of the bulkhead to peer in a window of the sitting-room, and when his mother pulled him back forcibly, rubbed his grimy little knuckles across his eyes, and a dark smooch appeared on his nose and cheeks.

She shut the door carefully behind her. Mr. Pepper labored frantically with the pipe. "No use to shake it any more till you get the hammer," advised Keziah. "Might's well talk while you're waitin'. What was it you wanted to tell me?" Abishai drew one hand across his forehead, leaving a decorative smooch of blacking on his perspiring countenance.

His rigid face and smoldering eyes, his grim lips, terrified us all. "If only I hadn't gone over it that last time," I heard him groan in reference to the "smooch" with which I had crushed all the lumps making every acre friable as a garden. "Look at Woodring's!" Sure enough. The cloud was thinner over on Woodring's side of the line fence. His rough clods were hardly touched.

He had got the rope, and spliced it up himself, that morning, and had brought the ten rings over, hanging upon his arms like bangles. They were still busy when dinner was ready; and Harry stayed at the first asking. It was a scrub-day in the kitchen; and Katty came in to take the plates with her sleeves rolled up, a smooch of stove-polish across her arm, and a very indiscriminate-colored apron.

It goes behind every piece of furniture, except the bed, a long, straight, even SMOOCH, as if it had been rubbed over and over. I wonder how it was done and who did it, and what they did it for. Round and round and round round and round and round it makes me dizzy! I really have discovered something at last. Through watching so much at night, when it changes so, I have finally found out.

But here I can creep smoothly on the floor, and my shoulder just fits in that long smooch around the wall, so I cannot lose my way. Why there's John at the door! It is no use, young man, you can't open it! How he does call and pound! Now he's crying for an axe. It would be a shame to break down that beautiful door!

Sanders and a tender love of the little Sanderses. There is young Smooch, he who smashed the Fly-Gallery in "The Mahlstick" newspaper, and was not for a moment taken in by the new Titian. There is Crosshatch, who has the marvellous etching by Rembrandt, of which there are only three copies in the world, and which he will not sell, no, Sir, not to the British Museum. There is Mr.
