On the 19th the transports stopped for wood at Warrenton, about ten miles below Vicksburg, and here a detachment of the 4th Wisconsin, sent to guard the working party, became involved in a skirmish with the Confederates, in which Sergeant-Major N. H. Chittenden and Private C. E. Perry, of A Company, suffered the first wounds received in battle by the troops of the United States in the Department of the Gulf.

It gave him an immense deal of trouble to fulfil his new duties, and yet no man could have set himself to the task more zealously and conscientiously. Captain von Wegstetten sometimes raged with impatience when his new sergeant-major could not meet his requirements. Mere indications and suggestions were not sufficient for the dull and somewhat limited understanding of Heimert.

"My regiment is in his brigade." "Yes, yes! I am aware of that. But have you made yourself known to him, I mean?" The young sergeant-major knew that his gallantry at the Alma had won him his general's approval, but he was too modest to refer to that episode. "I have never claimed the relationship, sir," he answered, simply, but with proud reticence; "it would not have beseemed my position."

Griesbach's signature was witnessed by Samuel B. Steele, who was then Troop Sergeant-Major, and who, after very notable service in the Police and the Militia, was promoted to a Major-Generalship and Knighted.

Heimert watched them closely; every word, every movement, almost every look. But his suspicions were not justified. Heppner was polite, easy, and perfectly unconstrained; while Albina chatted easily and naturally, and accepted the homage of their guest with a kind of haughty tranquillity. Towards her husband she displayed quite unusual tenderness, so long as the sergeant-major was present.

But why, because a man had had the good fortune to work under the sainted Moltke on the general staff, he should, therefore, always describe anything that had occurred since that time as "less good," that he could never understand. That evening after roll-call Heppner read out his own promotion to the rank of sergeant-major, and that of Sergeant Heimert to the post of deputy sergeant-major.

It was to consist of seven hundred and twelve men, forming fifteen companies, with sixteen captains, sixteen lieutenants, a sergeant-major, and a surgeon-major. While all this was happening, Roland, taking advantage of the suspension of hostilities, was riding up and down the province as if he were viceroy of the Cevennes, and wherever he appeared he had a magnificent reception.

Your shoulder is bound up; we have dressed you in your clothes again, and it will all be well. At this I began to remember. 'And Goguelat? I gasped. 'He cannot bear to be moved; he has his bellyful; 'tis a bad business, said the sergeant-major. The idea of having killed a man with such an instrument as half a pair of scissors seemed to turn my stomach.

Neither did they notice that a long, oppressive silence had fallen on them, that the lamp was burning low, and the room darkening. At last Heimert drew out his watch. "It's time to go to bed," he said; "we've got to get up to-morrow morning." Heppner and Albina awoke suddenly from their entranced condition, and the sergeant-major hastened to say good night. Quickly Albina prepared for bed.

He already owed Trautvetter more than a thousand marks; and the one-year volunteer now became less willing to lend, and caused the sergeant-major endless vexation and trouble. He would suddenly demand to be made corporal, or to be given a couple of weeks' leave: demands which it was quite impossible to grant.
